Re the wet pillars, your sunroof drain tubes are blocked. An infuriatingly common problem on the Golf.
Open the front doors and check at the base of the pillars for a rubber tube with a flattened end. Take a small flat blade screwdriver, and carefully insert it into the tube, opening up the end. Some foul smelling sludge will ooze out, followed by some clear water.
This sludge blocks the ends of the tubes, and prevents rainwater draining from the sunroof guttering. It eventually builds up to the point where it spills over the guttering and soaks the headlining and A-pillar trim.
Mind you, it's not as bad as the same issue affecting the scuttle drain on the Passat. That tends to direct the incoming water over a £500, non waterproof ECU.
Gotta love German build quality!

I recently purchased a 05 plate 4motion GT TDI 2.0 Golf. The handling is fantastic, but the MPG is very poor; only getting about 35mpg. This is very disappointing, as my last Golf 1.9 GT TDI was returning out over 50mpg. I have brought it to several garages, but none seem to be too alarmed by it, and respond by saying the 2.0 GT TDIs are returning just a little over 40mpg in real life. Is this true???

I have a Golf GT TDI 170 DSG registered April 07. I too have experienced an intermittent engine rattle. This can happen every three-four weeks or twice in one week. Car has now covered 7000 miles and the fault is not getting any worse, but its not improving either. It seems to occur after the gearbox has made a quick down-change, say from 3rd to 2nd. Dealer says he has never heard of this fault and as it is so intermittent it would be difficult to trace.
Any others with the same experiences?
