2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLX 2.8 VR6 from North America

Summary:

Great Car

Faults:

Water Pump Replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

I Own a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6 5 Speed. I love this Car. I have Had ZERO Problems with my Jetta. I bought this car when it was new and I have had it for about 7 Years. I currently have 80k miles on my Jetta and I would feel confident driving my Jetta anywhere. I think that just like anything els If you take care of it, it is bound to last longer. Just by routine changing the oil and air filters will greatly increase your engine life. This is a no Brainer. So STOP Saying that VW's are bad car's.its not the car in most cases, its the OWNER.

I agree with the first comment. Of course, it's the OWNER who takes the blame. The owners of VWs insist on paying premium prices for the sub-par quality vehicles & that any regular, let alone smart people rarely do. Most of us consult the Consumer Reports/ JD Power etc. before an expense this large (they have it on "No Buy" lists by the way). So it no surprise that after getting their "cute" cars those funny folks neglect them & make the already bad situation even worse. But isn't it fun to read their cries on this website among many others?

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.8L VR6 12v from North America

Summary:

Kicks domestic car butt!

Faults:

Power steering hose leak.

Climate control light burned out.

Rear and front cup holders broke.

General Comments:

This car is a seriously quick car. Acceleration is outstanding, as is the power band of the engine. The car's drivetrain gets an A+ from me.

In terms of the Jetta's exterior, I couldn't be happier. The car is a nice looking car. Enough said.

The car's interior needs reworking. Most notable is the design flaws of various components. For instance, (note: not all of these have happened to me) some models have faulty window parts, cup holders are subject to breaking as a result of poor construction, plastic components break and parts are expensive. I can attribute my luck with this car to the care I take when using it.

In terms of gas mileage, this car is not super good, but it's not horribly bad. The 1.8T engine probably has a better performance to gas consumption ratio, but the VR6 is just to fun to give up.

Trunk space is great. Also, the car is very practical. Larger cargo may require the use of the handy folding back seats, making cargo storage ridiculously amazing. This car is well designed, but not perfectly executed.

I love my car.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 1.9 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Affordable luxury

Faults:

Suspension bushings in rear needed to be changed.

Front left wheel bearing needed to be changed.

Headlights burn out quickly.

General Comments:

The Jetta is a solid, fun to drive ride. Although it has its quirks, I decided to buy a used '00 Jetta TDI having discovered the support I could pick up on the web.

The car is fairly quick for a diesel, and handles beautifully. It has so much more character than your average Corolla or Civic.

I would recommend it, but not if you can't afford to put regular maintenance on your car, or if you aren't tolerant of funny car problems. Don't get me wrong, the Jetta has never failed to get me from A to B, but it has its quirks...

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 2.8L from North America

Summary:

A powerhouse---if you can afford to keep up with maintenance

Faults:

Have had to replace 2 oxygen sensors.

Have had to replace thermostat.

Have had to replace a leaky water pump.

Broken cup holder.

Broken glove compartment.

EPC light and Check engine light just came on simultaneously.

General Comments:

I love my VR6--when it decides it wants to run correctly. This car is fast, comfy, and fun; however, it's beginning to cost way too much money to keep up with repairs. I bought the car used in January of 2006 and I've only had the car for 8 months, yet it's due for a third trip to the dealer, and I'm afraid this time it will be serious (both check engine and EPC lights are on). I haven't noticed a reduction in power, but I have noticed trouble in shifting into first gear and reverse over the past month or so. Very disappointing... this car definitely has the potential.
