2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 1.9 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Love the car,

Faults:

Turbo dies frequently. If it is at sustained speeds of over 170 km/h for an hour or more. Even at lower speeds it does that. Other than that cup holder (front) is broken. Other than that the car is great! I almost hit the legendary 100 mpg mark, doing over 2000 km on one tank of diesel. My biggest problem, cost of repairs. And it is much harder to do them myself than on my previous car. All in all, I think my car is a freak, considering the lack of problem.

Counting my blessings, Winnipeg Canada.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 2.8 from North America

Summary:

I have a VW story, but never again!

Faults:

EPC / Engine Skipping / Throttle / ETC.

In short, everything electrical has gone wrong with this car. From brake lights to headlights, to turn signals to brake lights again. But what compels me to take the time to write this is the problem that has plagued me for the past 2 years.

The problem started with occasional skip when running the car above 3x1000 RPM. It felt like you were just about to run out of gas. Weeks went buy with the same problem, but it started to happen m ore frequently and stronger to the point I thought one of the cylinders was not firing. At that point I took it to a trusted mechanic. He did a TUNE UP. The problem went away for a week. After a week it started again. Slowly at first, but within 2 days the problem was back full force.

Next we replaced accelerator sensor, because we were getting that code and sounded related to the skipping. No luck.

I took it to the first dealer. No luck.

Then to another very good mechanic. He tried replacing $1000 worth of parts from the injectors, to the throtle, to wires, to sensors. No luck.

Then another dealer. They could not find the problem.

Every one of these got the same codes, tried replacing everthing from fuel injectors, sensors you named they all tried. And I think all in good faith. No luck.

At last I got letter from VW saying something related to the EPC light which came on every time I had these issues needed to be recalled. I just called the dealer the VW suspended the recall.

VW was my car of choice, I liked the way looked, the way it drives. But I will never buy another one again.

General Comments:

VW Jetta was my car of choice. I like the way looks and the way it drives. But now I have so many VW stories I will never buy one again.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta from North America

Summary:

Money waster

Faults:

Oh my God! Every time I turn around something is going wrong with my 2001 Jetta. First, the inside is peeling on the door handles and the ashtray. The headlights constantly smoke, I have gotten several tickets because either the front headlights are out or the brake lights are out and I am not aware, the engine light has been on for over a year and no one can seem to fix it correctly past 3 days and the car jerks like crazy. It's hard to keep my payments on time when I have to keep using the money to get the car fixed every other weekend. I loved the car and decided to buy one. I will never ever by another one again. Oh, and it's horrible on gas and I had a nasty smell coming from my car and nothing I used work. After trying to inspect the car myself, I found mold in the trunk underneath where the spare tire is and on one last note, when it rains, sometimes my car gets flooded on the passenger side only even though the windows are rolled up.

General Comments:

When it's working properly in between breakdowns, it rides nice.
