2001 Volkswagen Jetta from North America

Summary:

Rides nice.... but too many repairs

Faults:

Sensor switch that operates the shifting, back and front lights.

Car died and is being repaired... for about $500.00... the transmission multi function switch failed.

General Comments:

I will never buy used car again and especially a Volkswagen. I've had the car to three different dealerships to be repaired and none of them agree on what is wrong with my car!!!

I look forward tyo reading a detailed, well-thought out, comprehensive review on your Jetta.

I understand your need to vent, but this review was just "Awful".

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 from North America

Summary:

Will never buy another!

Faults:

Oxygen Sensor Replace

Belt and tensioner replaced

Catalytic Converter.

General Comments:

I guess I should consider myself lucky. From what I've read Jetta transmissions go around 80,000. For me it was around 105,000. The car is an automatic and will get up to around 25 mph (2nd gear) rev and then jerk into gear. It's so frustrating. Per the VW manual, transmission fluid shouldn't ever need to be changed. I had it done anyway at the dealer. Hasn't changed a thing.

Every other month something else goes wrong with this thing. The latest problem is the driver side door. The sensor is bad. So even though the door is closed, the car thinks it is not. So your driving...let's say 70+mph. It will just start dinging and the interior lights will come on. What a pain!

I lied, actually the newest problem would have to be the turn signal. It's not in use and you're driving along and you hear the ticking noise as if it is on. This car is possessed!

And yes my windows have also fallen in the door. What a delight on a rainy cold day. Thanks Volkswagen for making me a believer in Japanese cars. Off to Toyota...

P.S. Does anyone know where the melted crayon smell comes from? Friends are starting to refuse rides.

Yes, I completely agree. I had a Jetta, same problems and more.

Do yourself a favor and GET RID OF IT. It would be cheaper to throw your Jetta away at a total loss than to continue driving it and paying for the endless repairs.

With VW today, no matter HOW MUCH you spend, your still going to have more problems to fix. It's just not worth it.

So sad to see VW go down the tubes this way.

Summary:

Nightmare

Faults:

You name it, it broke.

Windows fall off track, hazards burned out, tail lights need replacing all the time, all the emissions stuff (check engine light keeps coming on). Had it fixed four times..

Don't do it.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta VR6 from North America

Summary:

Nightmare

Faults:

The EPC light and MIL go on every single time it rains or is damp -- and the car either doesn't start or just shuts down while driving.

Had to have brakes changed around 30,000 miles.

Wax spell is nauseating to me and everyone who gets into my car.

I've dealt with dealers on the East Coast and West and customer service has been horrific at every turn.

One day the plastic (I think that's the material) started peeling off the dashboard.

General Comments:

I should be at work right now, but I'm trapped at home because it drizzled out yesterday (I now live in San Diego -- doesn't rain much) and the car will not start. EPC light is on again. It comes on everytime it rains or is damp. I know the drill. Tow the car to VW. They will tell me I'm crazy and has nothing to do with the moisture. They'll replace the MIL for the fifth time. I'll be charged a few hundred dollars. It will rain again and I'll start the process again.

As for the wax smell, I don't blame the person who will never buy again because of it. It's enough to make you literally sick on a hot day and embarrassing when you have people in the car with you. Smells exactly like melting crayons.

I'm a few payments away from being done with this. I've thrown away $30,000 on this lemon plus endless time in the shop and rude VW customer service in all locales. The worst part is, I'm not in the position to buy a new car. So they've got me and I've got to keep playing this game. I traded in an old Ford Probe when I bought this car. VW got the far better deal by getting that Probe -- it ran great and was reliable. Drivers wanted? Suckers found.

Thank you for giving me such a good laugh with "Drivers wanted, suckers found." I used to want a Jetta until I read all of these disturbing reviews. I think I will stick with my old BMW. Happy motoring everyone!
