2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

The car was dependable with minor flaws!

Faults:

Window regulators replaced under recall at 20,000 miles and at 30,000 miles.

Water Pump failed at 48,000 miles which was covered under warranty.

It burns a quart of oil every 2,000 miles which started on day 1. The owners manual actually mentions the oil consumption.

Paint on hood started peeling around 50,000 miles.

Catalytic Converter failed at 70,000 miles which was covered under warranty.

General Comments:

Aside from the items that I pointed out, I drove the car for 100,000 miles without any costly repairs aside from tires and brakes. Fortunately, VW had a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty for that car. However, I made sure that I got rid of it before 100,001 miles. That said, the car served me well.

Minor interior trim defects.

General Comments:

Quick, and a good compomise between handling and comfort.

Great car, only the normal things that go wrong with all makes.

I'm a mechanic with an associates degree and a total of six years of schooling in auto and diesel, and have worked at different dealers and the only thing that would keep me from buying another jetta is the way the new one looks.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0L from North America

Summary:

Entertaining, stylish and enjoyable, but lacking in attention to small details

Faults:

Well I saw the other comments made about the "Crayon smell" and I just wanted to comment that the smell is most probably coming from the A/C. I come from a VW family, we have had old bugs and New Beetles and Golf's and Jetta's and Rabbits galore. The water and condensation that builds up in the AC area gets a very musty smell to it if you run the A/C and then turn off the car. The best way to alleviate this is to run fresh air through it before you turn off your car or blow out the damp icky smell before you turn you're a/C back on.

I currently have a 2001 Jetta and I too have had that smell occur, but only recently since I have been using the A/C now that it is warmer out. The spray on coating over the handels and emergency break also peels and my car only has 30K on it! This was exactly the same as my 2000 New Beetle I just sold.

General Comments:

I love the look of my Jetta and I really like how sturdy and solid it drives. The seats are comfortable and even though I have the "2-slow" (2.0 L engine) I squirt around town and on the highways pretty well. The gear box has a nice feel when you shift and the steering is super responsive. Also- the interior parts that are NOT peeling feel strong and are easy to use. I do have to say that I 100% agree about the complaints made about the cup holders placement- it is like they were a bad after thought... I am a coffee drinker and a music lover and this car just does not accommodate those areas very well AT ALL. I love the support the seats give, but I have the cloth covered seats and it is very cheap and already has little 'fuzz-balls' and shows signs of wear. I just wish VW could get it ALL right and not skip the little details.
