2002 Volkswagen Jetta GL from North America

Summary:

This Jetta should have been painted yellow

Faults:

• Harsh down shift from 2 to 1...computer needed to be flashed after I had the car only 5 days.

• Gas cap repaired due to leak. (caused MIL indicator to come on)

• Leak down pump replaced due to broken seal (caused MIL indicator to come on)

• Transmission replaced June 2003 due to leaking seal which caused dropping oil pressure. Warning sign was harsh up shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.

• Transmission replaced again in Sept. 2003 due to leaking seal which caused oil to mix with coolant. Warning sign was again harsh up shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. This harsh shifting began 2 days after the transmission was replaced the first time.

• Front passenger window rattles.

• Car creaks when going over speed bumps, etc.

• Plastic coating around radio is peeling off.

General Comments:

Do not buy a newer Volkswagen! My 2002 Jetta is a lemon.

Our local VW dealers and VW Canada have been less than empathetic or helpful. We are wanting to meet with the VW "rep" who can offer a buy back. Hmmm... always an excuse as to why he can't meet with us...what's he busy doing... meeting with countless other dissatisfied Jetta owners?

Unfortunately, I think you might have a lemon. I bought a 2002 Golf, and I'm at 16,200 kilometres without any major problems.

2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS from North America

Summary:

It sucks!!!

Faults:

At 2000 Miles, the Fuel Gauge Cable snapped.

At 4600 miles, the front power window motor needed to be replaced.

At 7200 miles, the master cylinder had to be replaced.

Who knows what is next.

General Comments:

I will NEVER buy a VW product ever again. I am going to trade this car in for something else. I paid $24,000 for the top of the line Jetta and I got taken to the cleaners. Dealers will tell you that these cars hold there value. Only to the dealer not to the seller. At 6000 miles I tried trading in the car an could only get $16,000 for it. I depreciated $8000 in 8 months. This car really sucks and I will never deal or buy a VW Jetta again.

I don't know who told you that the GLS was the "top of the line" Jetta. When you were at the dealership, did you not see any Jetta GLX models?

2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 1.8 turbo from North America

Summary:

Piece Of Junk

Faults:

The engine coils failed, prompting dealer replacement.

The transmission has developed a leak at approx 12,000 miles.

General Comments:

I bought this car for the performance aspect it offered, but am now regretting it. I should have bought a Toyota instead.

I was fortunate in that when the ignition coils failed they did not incapacitate the car and the dealer replaced them without incident.

Now at 13,000 miles the manual transmission has developed a leak, the mechanic at the dealer has determined that it is probably the main shaft seal or a crack in the transmission housing itself. The dealer is claiming that since I put on an aftermarket air intake, blow off valve and some gauges that I have voided the warranty, which clearly states (according to Federal law) that Volkswagen has to prove that the parts I installed caused the failure. It is clear that they do not because the dealer is grasping at straws to not fix my vehicle and is giving me the runaround.

To anyone who is considering buying a Volkswagen, DON'T DO IT!! Any piece of junk that has such widespread coil failures and major transmission problems at such low mileage will eat your lunch!
