I have a VW Jetta bought for 4000.00 used and I agree it does burn oil fast, but that is the only thing I can say about the experience I have had over the 1st year that I have had it.
I bought it used from a Ford dealership. All I can say about it is that I love it! Mostly any car you get you can have problems with. I bought a brand new car before my Jetta and had nothing but problems with it, on top of the payments.
All I can say is so far so good. Thanks for the advice - just in case though!

The 2002 Jetta is awful. Same problem as everyone else. We should demand for this car to be under the lemon law. I also believe VW knew about this problem, because there are too many complaints with the same exact problems. Engine lights stay on and the transmission.

I have owned a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T since June 2002.
I have absolutely loved this car, but I am at my wits end with VW. It only has 101k on it and the transmission issues started at about 75k. I have been driving it like that as it hasn't gotten worse, but now it is burning oil like crazy. If the trans wasn't on its way out, I would try to diagnose and repair whatever the oil burning issue is, possibly the turbo?
In any event, I am not putting another dime into the car and trading it in as soon as possible. Stay away from VW, even in 2011. Since they cheapened the Jetta, even more with this new butt ugly body style, I shudder to think of the problems this new generation Jetta will incur. Step up VW and admit that your 2002 Jettas are nothing but junk! I guess you don't care that your garbage cars are unsafe to drive.
Never again VW... You lost a loyal customer and I am sure you don't care... Never again!

I also have a 2002 Jetta that I have loved, except... for the past 3 years I have had problems with my check engine light and temperature light coming on all the time. My coolant levels are always low and it burns oil very fast. I have never had any leaks on the ground, so it must be leaking somewhere else. But where? Nobody knows. The dealership has looked at my car 4 times and still can't figure it out. I want to love Volkswagen, but I see myself looking at other brands.
