1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.8L 16v DOHC from North America

Summary:

Fun to drive, combined with unique styling; get one and never let it go!

Faults:

Replaced front springs/struts with good used parts after one of the lower spring supports rusted out. The other one wasn't too far off.

Fuel tanks has sprung several leaks and cannot be filled more than halfway. Will have to drop the axle to replace tank.

Only rust on entire body is around the door handles.

Lowest and highest fan speeds on blower motor stopped working.

Motor mounts need replaced.

Rear calipers not the greatest design.

A/C hasn't worked since before I bought the car.

General Comments:

I'm the second owner of this Flash Silver Metallic 'rocco. The previous owner saved every last receipt for every part or service that he paid for. I constantly get asked if I drive a DeLorean (one of my favorite cars). Oddly enough, the Scirocco was designed by the same guy who designed the DMC-12! DeLorean looks, VW price! Despite the above troubles, I keep going back to the fact that any newer car that I can afford wouldn't be nearly as nice as this one. It handles great and is simply a blast to drive. Tilt the Recaro seats back a bit and it's perfectly comfortable for someone over 6' such as myself. Despite seemingly expensive parts costs, this car is well-designed and (aside from the affects of salt and winter) should last me another several hundred thousand miles. Of course, I'd still have my '64 Plymouth Valiant if it weren't for body rust. Still, I feel bad whenever I think about getting another car. I know I'd immediately regret parting with this one.

There is a recall on the fuel tank still... go to a VW dealer.

1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V 16v from North America

Summary:

If you find one ANYWHERE, buy it!!

Faults:

Many problems, but since this car was rescued from a car lot with NO salesmen, I expected to do a lot of restoring...

A/C, clutch, radiator, tires, axles, all replaced or repaired... about $3000 to put it into running shape.

General Comments:

I got this car because my daughter had the 1982 8V version and it was very responsive and fun to drive. The statistics on this car stated that its power-to-weight ratio was over 120 hp per ton, and it has proven that from the very start. It is a ball to drive, and I can't wait to get back in it all day at work...

Handling is awesome, as I love curvy roads already, and this car takes them on like no other I've ever had...

I'm glad I got it and resurrected it for it is the funnest car to drive... too bad Volkswagen hasn't seen fit to bring it back!!!

Volkswagen 16V Scirooco is an awesome car.

I have 3 of them.

1988 Volkswagen Scirocco GTX 1.8i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Manna from heaven!

Faults:

Sump oil filter gunged up causing oil pressure warning buzzer to intermitently sound.

Central locking sometime touchy.

Cold start not as it should be.

Drivers seat replaced and consequently the rest of the seats!

General Comments:

I am a great Scirocco enthusiast having had every model including a GTI and a Storm and have always wanted a GTX. I had heard mixed stories about them most commonly because of malfunctions in the extra gadgets you would not find in lower models.

This is a beautiful example of the car, basically kept by one mum until a couple of years ago when she gave it to her son whom abused it until he sold it to me. It had sat for 9 months and he put that recycled 20/50 oil in which probably explains the problem with the sump oil filter.

The car handles beautifully and the engine will purr once it is warmed up. A little chuggy when cold, but that passes within a couple of minutes. The MFA even works on MPG, which from my experience of MFAs is a rare thing!

Interestingly, the rear seats have lap belts, my G-reg Scala has the full belts so they must have changed the config in between those years. An interesting detail for the buyer! I swapped the seats with some from my GTII as the driver's seat had died (the guy was rather fat!) and I wanted the seats to all match. A straightforward job!

Beyond the slightly reluctant start, the car is robust and refined.. the extra weight and sound proofing on the GTX makes for a wonderful Scirocco experience. I have an injection Scala also and although better looking, the GTX has the better drive.

Brakes are also better on this model, the front discs are ventilated giving a better bite.

These are pretty good cars, although I'm intrigued as to why you wouldn't buy another.
