1989 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic, fast and still looks good!

Faults:

Absolutely nothing. Last MOT rather complicated though, no garage seemed to be able to obtain an exhaust manifold to connect the exhaust to the engine. Local garage had it for a couple of weeks and eventually solved the problem. MOT bill came to £250 - bargain, compared to the Citroen ZX I used to have! Apart from exhaust, nothing else was wrong.

General Comments:

Bought this car for £900 whilst progressing an insurance claim for my previous car. It's been absolutely perfect and great fun to drive. Although it's the oldest car I've ever owned, it's been great and always starts first time! Having bought a newer car now, I can't bring myself to part with it, so I am keeping it for a rainy day in the garage. It's very fast and *surprisingly* economical too!

1989 Volkswagen Scirocco GT 1.8 carb. from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An absolute beauty

Faults:

Driver's seat is just starting to wear thin on the bolster.

Driver's side CV joint went about 120000 miles.

Brake pipes needed changing at last Mot, at about 140000 miles (don't know when last changed, but a good while ago!).

General Comments:

This car has been a pleasure to own - I've done 70000 miles in the last few years, including a trouble-free 5000 mile trip from Aberdeen to Budapest last year when she was sitting on about 130000 miles.

Haven't had any major problems with her, starts first time every morning.

The paintwork, despite a couple of patches of rust coming through on the driver's door and back hatch around the logos, is still beautiful, and polishes up like new. The "paprika" red paint I got from the VW dealer to sort the patches was an exact match, even after all these years.

The only downside is that the seats aren't super-comfortable (although the aforementioned run to Hungary wasn't too bad) and it could really use air conditioning in warmer countries.

1989 Volkswagen Scirocco GTXi 1.8i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A skyrocket for not much outa ya backpocket

Faults:

I bought the skyrocket from a friend who had owned it for 2 years. He had done a lot of work on it so there was, or has, been very little for me to do so far.

The bodywork is in showroom condition and it has had a re-spray a year ago.

Previous problems with it have been, the injection unit needed replacing, a new clutch, brakes, plugs and leads. General stuff.

General Comments:

Still gets looks when out and about.

Surprisingly fast when you put the close ratio gearbox to good use.

Get an uprated Kent cam, Green induction kit, power boost valve, performance exhaust and you can pump the brake horse from 112 to 142BHP which believe me is fast on a car that size.

A great car for little money!

Faults:

Sticky throttle when purchased.

Bonnet catch was a little dodgy, but fixed now.

General Comments:

The car is great fun to drive, quick, handles well, firm, nice seating position and lots of room in the front.

Good on fuel, and being a VW... ultra reliable!

Summary:

Classic looks and high performance

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Best car I've owned - it looks great and is in superb condition for its age (12 years) - no rust and the inner and outer bodywork looks new.

It drives like a dream, very quick and sturdy on the motorway. I absolutely love this car!

1989 Volkswagen Scirocco GT 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best fun for your money there is

Faults:

Everything that could wear out promptly did in the first six months, not a design fault - a previous owner fault!

Since then very little has needed doing until this year when the engine needed re-sealing.

General Comments:

Fantastic fun on motorways and uphill.

Very useful acceleration in town.

You need a mechanic who understands this car.

A pain to insure.

A bone shaker on London roads.

Looks very cool.

1989 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing as yet. Touch wood.

General Comments:

Excellent car, and a cheaper and more exclusive alternative to the equivalent age Golf GTi. High insurance although reasonable quotes can be found. Handling is excellent, but the front suspension needs polyurethene bushes and a strut brace to really tighten things up. So far I'm over the moon.
