1999 Volkswagen Sharan SE 1.9TDI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very unreliable expensive car

Faults:

Air flow meter (twice)

Air conditioning gone

Water pump replaced

Fan belt snapped

Air box replaced (due to poor performance, but made no difference)

Central Electronic Control Unit.

General Comments:

This has to be the most unreliable and expensive car I have ever had the misfortune to own.

Poor power, but reasonable fuel economy.

Very poor dealer service and mis-diagnosis (two separate dealers).

Dealer costs are very high.

Has a lot of body roll around corners.

German lemon

A/C condenser defective due to impact of a stone.

A/C evaporator defective at 25000km

A/C compresser defective at 90000km

Climatronic controller defective at 100000km

A/C evaporator defective at 120000km

Clutch defective from A/C compressor... it nearly set fire to the car!

Exhaust changed at 140000km (rusted, holes detected)

V belt of engine defective 170000km.

General Comments:

The car has been driven in a proper manner... not like a F1 pilot.. but the overall quality of the components is low!

I will certainly never buy a VW product anymore... the official service center is very expensive, no parts on stock.. it is a complete disaster!

We own a Ford Galaxy Tdi (130) Bhp and every now and then the clutch seems to slip and the pedal won't come all the way back up!

1999 Volkswagen Sharan Sport 1.8T from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great MPV - get the Seat equivalent for better value

Faults:

The Air Con got less and less effective, fixed under warranty.

One dealer jacked it it up on just two points which is too much weight - it crushed the sills (fixed FOC).

General Comments:

The 1.8T (150hp) makes it a very nice drive, although consumes a lot of fuel (don't know MPG, but a tank lasts between 300 and 450 miles very much dependent how you drive it.

Love the MPV thing, 6, 5, 4, or just 2 seats - massive flat space with just the front two fitted.

Heated seats and front screen nice luxuries. No problems at all with plastic trim, no breakages or failures (2 kids), can not understand other reviews (we have a Seat Alhambra and the trim on that I fine also).

Metallic silver paint and alloys wheels continued to shine.

Needs cruise control (and remote radio control) - both were fitted on the cheaper Alhambra (which does 600+ mpg 1.9D).
