2005 Volkswagen Touran SE 1.8 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good overall, but very poor and expensive electrical problems

Faults:

Electronic stabilisation system failed at 25000 miles - cost £1700.

Central locking failed at 30 months, 40 months and 45 months - cost £500 each of the last two times.

General Comments:

This is a good car to drive, but there is clearly a major problem with the electrics.

2005 Volkswagen Touran SE 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good, versatile car badly let down by major component failures

Faults:

Gearbox total failure (components punched hole through casing), including fly wheel and clutch at 36000 miles (covered under warranty-Just!)

Mid row rear seat belts always rattle after use - a small but very annoying design fault as the buckles have to be manually moved up to their top position to stop them rattling against the doors - kids never do this!

Normal problem with rear wiper not working unless the boot door is absolutely shut tight.

Alarm goes off on own accord - 3/4 times annually.

Electric windows have all opened on their own overnight.

At 47000 and just over four years old, despite me having full main dealer service, and despite mentioning the slowly increasing whine from the turbo at every service (only to be told it's within tolerance) the turbo has failed, sucking debris into the inter-cooler. Very big bill on its way.

General Comments:

I needed 7 seats for the family, and the Touran gives me this together with excellent fuel economy and good handling. Generally, over the last four years the car has been enjoyable to drive.

However, I went for the VW because of reliability and resale values, but this car has totally let me down in a big way twice. I am presently trying to get a dealer contribution to the turbo replacement, and if not will take out action under the Sale of Goods act for a car that is not fit for purpose - turbos and gearboxes on a fully serviced car should last longer than mine have!

I think they must also have Monday cars in Bavaria?

2005 Volkswagen Touran TDI 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A defective car

Faults:

At 21,000 miles my car broke down and the dealership stated I needed a new clutch costing around £400 (not covered on warranty).

Now at 29,000 miles the car is registering a fault, the ABS control unit needs replacing, and this part alone will cost me £950.00 without the cost of labour. I was not told when I bought this car that every time something goes wrong, for me to have a correct diagnosis, I would have to go back to the dealership to have this done, and it would cost me around £88!

General Comments:

Coating on the steering wheel is peeling off.

This car is of poor quality!

2005 Volkswagen Touran SE 1.9TDI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice car, better than the Sharan, but a few niggley faults

Faults:

Rear wiper works intermittently.

All windows have opened on their own on a number of occasions.

Internal light bulb gone in less than a year.

Dash display occasionally too bright.

General Comments:

I like the look of the car for what it is and it's an okay drive, but it has had a number of electrical faults.

The rear wiper works intermittently - some times it works, sometimes it doesn't.

All the windows have opened on their own on a number of occasions over night, when it has been snowing and raining, so the interior of the car has been very wet a few times.

An internal light bulb gone in less than a year.

Dash display is occasionally too bright (it goes very red!).

Fuel consumption is less than 40mpg, but it doesn't burn oil (one litre in 10000 miles)

Regarding that the rear wiper works intermittently.

My experience is that the boot must be shut properly for the rear wiper to work.

For the rear wiper - I thought something broke, but fixed it when properly closed the boot.

2005 Volkswagen Touran Tdi 1.9 tdi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great to drive!

General Comments:

We used to drive a Citroen Picasso and decided to go for 7 seats with the VW Touran and have never looked back. The drive is so much better and feels so much more solid than the Picasso - especially at high speeds. The diesel is great and has lots of power. We didn't look at the 2.0, but I may consider next time looking into the Automatic Diesel, as the mpg is similar to the Manual transmission. Everything in the cabin feels so much for refined - though they cost a bit more, we are so happy with our purchase!
