1973 Volkswagen Type II Campmobile 2 Litre from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

If you like going places far and wide and have that mobility this vehicle is for you

Faults:

Rust, rust and more rust! But I have managed to eliminate this problem over the past 3 years. I have just had a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and seals put in. nothing else major.

General Comments:

My Campmobile travels on the open road like an absolute dream! Very comfortable, can, and have driven for hours and hours, stopping only for refuelling and a bite to eat and still feel good once arriving at the destination. Around town is another story with it being a bit of a pain changing gears etc and chews up a bit of petrol too.

1973 Volkswagen Type II 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not just a vehicle, but a way of life

Faults:

Rust, Rust, Rust! Same as all the others!

Engine oil leak - Again, same as all the others.

Headlight wiring problem in South West Wales left us stuck, but the nice RAC man saved the road-trip!

General Comments:

No performance, but that's not why you buy one really. I got 83mph out of mine (with a 25 mile run-up!)

Strangers wave and smile at you at random.

Handles like the QE2, and takes 3 weeks notice to stop, but all part of the character.

Push-down pedals are very comfortable - once you get used to them!

Took it on the inevitable pilgrimage to Cornwall, which is why it was invented.

Own one - just to say you have.

If you are only getting 50 mph there is a problem, you should be able to maintain 60-65 for long periods. I'd have it looked at if I were you.

I had a similar problem with my van only obtaining 45 to 50mph. It was because the throttle cable was stuck. It only cost £20.00 to have it fixed at an air cooled specialist garage.

1973 Volkswagen Type II Camper 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Old van. Engine went on fire once, nearly lost the lot, but fixed in a car park on a Saturday morning with Haynes manual and a little guesswork, and it started first time!!!!!!!!!!!

Brakes cease every winter. Exhaust had to be replaced, used cheaper Beetle one, no problem.

General Comments:

Great van, easy to repair, fun. Hard to drive as no top speed above 55.
