1971 Volvo 145 Deluxe B20A from Norway

Summary:

Cheap and simple ride, endless space and style

Faults:

Rust around windshield leads to leak.

Rear brake calipers need overhaul.

Windshield wiper motor was short-circuited when it fell apart, could easily be fixed. But lots of work hours, hidden behind dashboard.

Valve troubles, probably need replacement. Car drives anyway.

General Comments:

Unusually much space - little technology to hide, so you can actually stretch your legs everywhere, or carry 1 passenger + dining table with eight chairs inside the car.

It is very comfortable!

Style - everybody loves the car, and forgets that its performance is still that of a basic 60s car.

Very, very easy to maintain, any farmer anywhere can help you when in trouble.

Cheapest car I have ever owned! But the to-do-list is growing, so I need to upgrade to something else.

1972 Volvo 145 S 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Durable new car for $3,759 in 1972

Faults:

Only problem was warping of front brake discs; seemed to happen several times, replaced them just before trading it in for a Pontiac wagon.

General Comments:

Quality was very good, good mileage, nice ride and performance (4:11 rear end), but the radio on the right side of the dash was awkward to adjust.

1972 Volvo 145 S B20B from North America

Summary:

1972 Volvo 145 is a car worth keeping.

Faults:

She threw a rod in 1991 at about 150K miles, we rebuilt another B20B engine, now she's almost to 400K. We spin-balanced the new engine, the water pump has never failed.

Ignition condenser has failed twice in the last 10 years or so. Symptoms much like water in the gas.

The old carburetor needles ran too lean at speed and burned the exhaust valves so we redid the head about 300K. We added an air-fuel meter, it helped us choose the best needles for the SU-HIF6 carburetors.

General Comments:

4 speed + OD and manual steering makes me feel in control and in touch with the road.

Very comfortable front seats and driving position. Rear bench seat OK, not great, rear seat could be improved by adding headrests.

Nicely balanced rear wheel drive design, good winter handling.

We have IPD sway bars for flatter handling and like them.

Excellent tight turning radius.

Excellent visibility all round.

Good cargo capacity.

Easy to work on, except for under-dash jobs.

1974 Volvo 145 2.0 Fuel Injection Gasoline from Costa Rica

Summary:

Volvo.For Life

Faults:

After 30 years and 250,325 km no mayor problem ever!!!

General Comments:

This most be one of the worlds best cars, I bought it when I got married and that was three decades ago. During all these years, and after beign the learning car for my wife and three sons, the car has asked for nothing, but really basic maintenance.

The most expensive job I had on this car was changing the fuel pump about three years ago.

The best part is that with its I-4 2.0 B20F Engine this car can easily run at 170 km/hr, not forcing the machine at all. Not bad for a grand-pa.

Good car-good Volvo.

1972 Volvo 145 Sport Wagon B-20 from North America

Summary:

I hthink this car is great and if I could find another in better shape, I would buy it

Faults:

The master cylinder went, constant points replacement. I love it.

General Comments:

I'm in a wheel chair {previous car accident}, this car suits me well. I put a lot of miles on in a summer, and bang it around a lot, dumpster green and all the chrome.

As stated by another, the trans shifts hard and sporty, unlike his mine will chirp second! Pretty cool for an old wagon!
