2003 Volvo V40 Sport 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable estate car

Faults:

Quite a lot, but mostly just wear and tear. And it is 20+ years old with higher mileage now. Keep up with services and it will last, it's a Volvo!

General Comments:

Silver V40 estate, a 2003 model (last of them for this generation) very 1990s feel about it, but that's why I love it and kept it a long time. Simple and reliable.

Very comfortable interior. Great to drive. 1.8 petrol engine is punchy and still does around 35 mpg.

Has a bit of a boring image, but I don't know why, it comes from a time when Volvo were shaking off the old man image and becoming cool.

Well worth a look if you just need a durable cheap old estate car; used to be a common sight on the roads, but not many about now.

It did still have its "old man" image at this point, but I always liked the S40/V40 of this generation. But to be honest the later 2004 newer models were much better, if a bit more complicated and expensive to run.

2003 Volvo V40 1.6 petrol from Norway

Summary:

Sell it, before it breaks down

Faults:

Well everything is wrong or is breaking down.

Heat in the driver's seat doesn't work.

Automatic thermostat for the climate control broke.

Gears are hard to change, due a worn seal in the gearbox (common issue).

Rear brake caliper rusted/stuck.

Rear windshield wiper fell off from the "arm" holding it.

Water/condensation in the left front light (common issue).

Cracks in brake hose front (common issue).

Brake oil lamp lit up because of sensor failure?

One broken rear suspension.

General Comments:

It's a good looking car and handles well. Interior looks modern too.

Fuel efficient and perfect for city driving. On the highway it's noisy though.

Bought this used, but I do regret it, since it ain't a real Volvo. My Volvo 740GL 1987 had passed 540000km when sold, my Volvo 850SE 1995 had 360000km when sold, and my S70 1999 had 240000km before being hit by another car.

So what happened? This won't last forever, for sure, with all its weaknesses.

2003 Volvo V40 1.9 gas from North America

Summary:

Love Volvo, love the car!

Faults:

Paint on the hood was blotchy in spots, and after the Volvo rep looked at the car, it was determined that it happened sometime between shipping and getting to the dealer. They originally thought it might be tree sap from the parking lot.

Leather seats are very comfortable, but I can tell they are not as durable as on my Ford. I can already see wear marks appearing.

General Comments:

In general, it's a good and solid buy for someone that wants the durability and safety of a Volvo, but that does not want to pay the extra for the V70 or XC90.

The gas mileage on the V40 is surprisingly good, and improves greatly when cruise control is used.

2003 Volvo V40 from North America

Summary:

Quality ----and it will cost you too!

Faults:

Cruise control works (some of the time.

Brakes went out at 16K mark.

Gas mileage is below average.

General Comments:

The V40 is a dynamic little runabout.

Excellent power with the attached turbo.

Power comes at a price with dismal gas mileage.

The blackest mark is the fact that, as the dealer told me, it is common place to have the back brake pads go out around 15K miles.

The salesperson failed to let us now about this unique design feature.
