2001 Volvo V70 turbo from North America

Summary:

When it runs, it runs GREAT, when it needs repairs, it's very expensive

Faults:

At ~60,000, needed a new transmission.

At 100,000 now. Need a new battery/alternator or both.

General Comments:

Car runs awesome and very reliable when in good condition, but when the message center comes on - I know I'm in trouble, and it will cost me a lot of cash!

2001 Volvo V70 2.4T from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Warning -avoid at all costs-

Faults:

Shock absorbers leaking and rattling.

Strut mounts cracked.

Leaking water pump.

Problems with oil pressure.

*** Gearbox slipping, $5.000 to repair ***

General Comments:

Buyers beware. Do not get suckered in by the comfort and drive of this car, which is great in all regards. It is a disappointment that it is so unreliable, and parts and service are so expensive. The gearbox issues with all V70 models are a big problem, and this model of Volvo should be avoided at all costs as a result. I will never buy a Volvo again. I would sooner burn my money in a fire.

2001 Volvo V70 2.4T 2.4 turbo from North America

Summary:

Excellent car, relatively inexpensive.

Faults:

Minor problems I've had started with a broken lock on my glove compartment, which causes a lot of noise when driving over bumpy roads.

Another minor issue has been that the driver's door lock can no longer be locked by my remote, only manually. This means that I can unlock my car for passengers from a distance, but in order to open my door I have to use my key.

The last minor problem I've had is a slight squeak towards the rear of the car (something must be lose), but I am yet to figure out where it is coming from exactly.

The front two seats are pretty worn, especially on the bottom, but that is understandable. Overall the leather and dash are in near excellent condition. I must add that I bought this car with only one previous owner who took very good care of it.

The only major issue I have had is my struts have virtually gone out. Again this is understandable being that my car is now at 100k miles. I have chosen to replace them with Bilstein Heavy Duty -- a bit pricey, but worth the superb handling and smooth ride.

General Comments:

Overall, once I dealt with the suspension, this is an excellent car that I will surely keep for a very long time if not forever. The engine is beastly (if need be), the ride is easy, very sleek design. I am thinking of doing an ECU upgrade to give it a bit more power.

2001 Volvo V70 2.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

ETM disaster area!

Faults:

ETM failed at 82,000 miles - We have only done 200 miles in it.... shame.

General Comments:

The car looks good, but stalls very easily when pulling away.

2001 Volvo V70 T5 2.4T from North America

Summary:

FAST Luxury with the safety of a tank

Faults:

The transmission had to be replaced at 7000 miles. However, many cars left sitting untouched for 6 years will have problems with any part of the car that has seals and fluids. I blame the transmission problem on under-use. I had a warranty to replace it, so my out of pocket cost was $0.00.

General Comments:

This car is FAST. Who expects a stationwagon to have 250+ horsepower and to be able to blow any V6 "sports car" out of the water? My wife wanted a minivan and thankfully I convinced her our 2 kids and all their junk would be better off in the world's safest car. Trust me, if you have never driven a Volvo, make sure the first one you get behind the wheel of has a turbo attached to it. Thank you Volvo for making toting the family around extremely enjoyable!

2001 Volvo V70 2WD 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Horrible vehicle from a reliability standpoint and would NEVER purchase a Volvo again!!!

Faults:

On board computer failure

Headlamp wiring harness failure / replacement

Front suspension / engine mount failures & replacement

Rear main seal leaking / replacement

Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) failure/replacement

Door lock motor failure / replacement

Window lift motor failure / replacement

Numerous rear tail light bulb failures/ replacements

Front brake rotors warped/replaced @ less than 9000 miles

O2 Sensor failure / replacement.

General Comments:

This car was purchased on Volvo's reputation for reliability and safety, however it has been a tremendous letdown on the reliability end. It has been in the service shop / dealer where we bought it more than I care to remember. We purchased the extended warranty before the orig. one expired as a pure necessity due to the repair history experienced.

Thankfully, most of the repair work necessary was covered under warranty, but I have completely lost faith in the Volvo product. Absolute mechanical / electrical disaster! Repairs would have exceeded $12,000 on a gently operated $43,000 vehicle.
