2005 Volvo XC70 D5 2.5 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Faults:

Transmission failure at 120000 km. So many XC70's with the same problem. Clearly a known issue with these cars. Volvo paid 50% of the $8000 cost to replace.

General Comments:

Lovely car, but transmissions are a problem. Check comments all over the Internet on Volvo's.

2005 Volvo XC70 turbo from North America

Summary:

Excellent Alaska car

Faults:

No problems.

General Comments:

Have a local mechanical shop perform the required maintenance.

Excellent responsive 4-wheel drive. Wide stance gives superior stability. Perfect Alaska car. Not a Subaru. Doesn't ride like a Jaguar, but I'll give up the ride for dependability and winter driving.

As an owner of an 01 Subaru Outback, I've always admired Volvo wagons for their take on luxury, safety, and practicality. I'm a big fan of the 2.5T inline five cylinder. It's so much easier to work on than my brother's Audi A4 1.8T. Also, I appreciate the Volvo standard 3300lb of towing for a car; it's very European in their thinking, whereas here in the U.S. you have to buy a truck.

My question is do you think the XC70 would be able to compete with the Subarus in the 2016 Alcan Winter Rally? You can check it out at www.alcan5000.com

2005 Volvo XC70 Cross Country 2.5 T from North America

Summary:

Comfortable, attractive and easy to drive, but expensive to maintain

Faults:

Nothing so far. Just typical maintenance items like replacing wiper blades. Brakes will be done soon, but that's expected.

General Comments:

Maintenance was free for first 30K, but it is expensive after that. Extremely comfortable.

Wait to buy until Volvo is offering a large "marketing incentive." You can save a bundle then.

2005 Volvo XC70 from North America

Summary:

Capable family wagon

Faults:

Window switch failed, replaced under warranty.

Failed tire at 15k miles.

No other faults have occurred.

General Comments:

Comfortable and capable SUV alternative that performs well in all conditions, especially with New England winters.

Interior offers roomy accommodations for four, and storage for some items in the wagon.

Reasonable running costs.

Vehicle handles well, if a bit noisy, with the AWD, but that trade-off is more than made up in its ability to go through deeper snow than most station wagons.

As far as MPG goes what did you expect in a turbo charged Cross-country? these are very heavy cars not a Honda Civic.

I drove all the way to 120 MPH, it was still very smooth. You might want to check tires balance or aligment.
