I have 52,000 on my 2004 Volvo XC-90 and my transmission needs to be replaced. I only have 4 months left on my lease and it's going to cost $4,000! I would never have thought something like this could happen!

I too have a 2004 XC90 T with 62,000 miles and the transmission is "out". 3rd gear "slipping" or out of sync. For the amount of money spent for this vehicle, and the reputation of Volvo, one would not expect to experience such major repairs so early in the life of a vehicle. I am very disenchanted with the product and will NEVER buy another Volvo again. And to think I gave up a Lexus for this...
I would be interested to know what if any action anyone else might be considering, given the high number of issues with the transmissions on these vehicles. Perhaps a mass revolt would get the attention of the manufacturer, and encourage them to make it right with their customers.

To the above comment. If you had got a Lexus RX300, then you would only have got a few more miles out of the gearbox - read the reviews!!!

The transmission on my 2004 XC90 with 72,000 miles just went. $4200 to fix! I agree with most posts here. It's near libelous that Volvo should have these types of problems at this mileage. I followed all manufacturer guidance on service and maintenance too.

The radiator leaked into the transmission cooler... ruined transmission $4,000 to fix... it appears that the transmission is a major problem for Volvo XC90...I have never towed anything... no hitch installed.

I have an '05 T6 XC90. First transmission went out at 22,000 miles. Repair was done under warranty. Second transmission went at 45,000 miles, again, replaced under warranty. Exactly one week later the transmission failed again. Warranty repair was performed AGAIN and three days later... the transmission started to slip AGAIN. My XC90 on has 45,000 miles on it. This should not be happening to this type of vehicle period. The service tech told me that they asked Volvo to give them a Brand New transmission instead of another refurbished one? Volvo authorizes dealers to use re-furbished transmissions... TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE ON VOLVO'S PART. The dealer has now had my XC90 for two weeks. I called Volvo Customer care t complain and they just blew me off.
I'm very disappointed in Volvo for this and as soon as they fix it I am getting rid of it and I will never buy another Volvo ever again!!
Sign me up for the class action law suit...

Have an '03 Volvo XC90/T6. Has 72K miles on it and the transmission just went on it. Cost me $5200 at the Volvo dealership in Sarasota, FL. My wife was there on a trip.. live in MI. Am going to go head to head with Volvo Customer Service this week. Wish me luck.

2003 XC90 T5 AWD - 45000 miles - transmission just died. There are a lot of us affected by this same problem.
Anyone know a good class action lawyer?

Volvo uses Aisin-Warner automatic transmissions. Few others uses same transmissions, I think Honda is one of them.
Besides, transmission in the XC90 2.5T geartronic is far better and more reliable than one in the XC90 T6.

2005 Volvo XC90 T6 - Transmission is out at 41K miles - Going to the shop Monday. What a joke for "America's favorite SUV" - I don't think that's going to last long.

I fear I've joined the ranks here. Last night heard a terrible clunking sound and think the transmission slipped or failed. 2004 xc90 T6 with 42,000 miles. Maybe we can start a campaign or class action suit. Anyone proficient on the web to start a specific xc90 transmission failure site where we can add our names and information and call Volvo (and possibly a lawyers) attention to it?

I also have an '04 XC90 T6. Transmission has been going for the last year, intermittent slippage. Took it to the dealer twice. They claimed they couldn't duplicate the problem. The a mechanic confided that they've had lots of problems with these transmissions. Problem is mating this engine with crappy Ford transmission. He also said Volvo are fighting tooth and nail to avoid paying for these (when out of warranty). I've asked everyone I know that owns one of these if they've had problems, and they ALL have. I think this IS grounds for a class action suit.

I own a 2003 XC90. The transmission went on it yesterday. Volvo are not interested and say it is not under warranty. Can anyone give me some advice as this looks like a very common problem. My car had to be towed home and is now sat on my drive as a non starter.

I just took my 2003 XC90 T6 into the Volvo dealer with the transmission slipping (at 58,000 miles and out of warranty). It is a pity for a claimed "high end" vehicle to have this happen. Transmission must be replaced to the tune of 4000.00. If anyone is aware of any recourse - I would love to join in!

I just picked up my wife's 2004 XC-90 from the Volvo dealership, it was in for its third transmission. The first transmission failed at 10,700 miles, and the second one failed at 93,000 miles. We have had this car for exactly 4 years; I calculated the cost of maintenance at $300 per month (that does not even count the first transmission replacement since it was under warranty). We have had broken motor mounts, leak in rear self levelling shocks ($1,500), ball joints, bearings, sway stabilizers, etc.
After fighting with the dealer on Monday, they were willing to cut the cost of the new transmission from $5,100 to $2,800. This is the first and last Volvo for me.
By the way, when I picked the car up this morning, the service rep was explaining that this was very unusual. Within 2 minutes I over heard the customer at the next service counter complaining that his transmission should last more than a year, I stood up and told him that we were here paying for our XC-90's third transmission. If anyone knows of a class action suit, count me in.

My '03 XC90 T6 has 62K miles and as all of you here have posted, the transmission goes into what they call "limp" mode, which means the transmission is failing, so they lock the car into 3rd gear for you to be able to drive to their dealer, where they summarily tell you the transmission has to be replaced for $4k.
Unacceptable; I will be contacting an attorney, in the meantime looking for a better car.
Guess it's back to BMW, Lexus, or MB for me!

Transmissions on 03+ are indeed different and less problematic than on older models. All manuals are good, bit tiptronics are not. If you choose a tiptronic, go with 2.5T engine, not with T6. Transmissions on the T6 are problematic.
