As a follow up to my June 16th post, here is what happened;
We took the vehicle to the dealer on June 17th and was told it needed a new tranny. It had 72225 miles on it and out of warranty. I did talk with them regarding all of the tranny problems out there and they did admitt they had swapped out "a few" of them. They wanted $4800 but after our conversation they came back that Volvo would buy the tranny if I picked up the $1500 in labor. At the time I was feeling pretty good not having to eat the whole thing. The tranny was replaced and we got the vehicle back on June 26. On July 14th with 724 miles on the newly installed transmission it failed when my wife was out of town. It was towed to another dealer who said it needed a new transmission. We picked up the car today (Aug 4) with it's second replacement tranny in it. Thankfully this tranny and the towing were covered. Now my wife has always loved the car but obviously is concerned about keeping it or getting a new one. Definately not a great selling point for Volvos.

Well, add us to the list. We have a 2004 T6 XC-90 with 45,000 miles and were just told we need a new transmission for $4500. We are 6 months out of warranty. We had it out with the service guy at the dealer last night and he said they'd go to bat for us with Volvo. I'm not hopeful after finding this site. We were also told this is rare. Doesn't look that way. Sad thing is I'd dump this car, but given the problems that seem to be known out there, we're going to "take it in the shorts" in one way or the other. This is not at all the experience I expected when spending the extra money on a Volvo. Could have had 4 Hyundais by now with 10 year warranties!

I have a Volvo XC90 transmission gone after 76000 what lemon. So many repairs on this thing in the last two years. Volvo will pay for half, then I pressed and they agree to 75% of part only. Volvo for life what a joke. Some one sue, I'm in. These jokers need to repair this lemon, it's a outrage. 50,000 dollars should've got a X5 BMW. I'm sure they would fix tranny

I've posted some time ago that I've just bought a T6 and I'm concerned asking if there is some workaround, maybe other transmission... I had no answer and I've decided to sell it. I managed to sell my XC just after 4 weeks without loosing money and I surely am happy right now. I was afraid to drive it properly, I was always driving it like walking on eggs... I'm not sure if I will ever even think about buying a Volvo. Maybe if they would admit the flaw and would give a solution, like another type of tranny, not the same to fail in a few miles LOL. It's a real shame...

Thanks ;-)
I just looked at what I thought was a sweeeet deal on an XC90 T6 but I was very leery of the 100k miles it already had on it, and thank goodness for these review sites!
Perhaps I'll buy it if they include free transmission replacements for the next 100k miles ;-)

One more - 2004 XC90 T6 - trans failed at 38k, replaced under warranty no charge (Santa Ana Volvo in CA - no real service issues). Vehicle has 65k now and trans just started slipping yesterday.

Hello!
Thanks to everyone who posted here. My transmission urgent sign flashed on and my transmission needed to be replaced (2003 xc90) out of warranty with 67,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and didn't need more than to hint around that I knew what the deal was for my service rep to contact volvo and try and get them to cover it. I paid only $360 as a deductible for the entire replacement of the transmission and they gave me a loaner while they were working everything out. The whole thing sucked but I was happy with the resolution.

Bought a 2004 XC90 with 84,000 miles. Two weeks later I have to put in a new transmission at a cost of $4700. Bought this car for reliability. I am absolutely sick over this purchase and will never buy another Volvo. Especially with the company's refusal to take responsibility for this issue. I have never owned a vehicle that I am so afraid to drive. What legal recourse do we have?

Add us to the list
Our 2004 T6 transmission failed at 30K, under warranty. Thought this was strange and asked Volvo, but they assured us this was a fluke. Came very close to selling it prior to the end of the warranty, but the trade in offers were unexpectedly low on this very expensive vehicle. Now transmission has failed again at 68K. Volvo refuses to pay. Just spent $500+ at my 60,000 mile service. Not to mention the thousands of dollars I have spent on tires, brakes and other problems THIS CAR IS A LEMON!

One more 2004 XC90 T6 AWD with "Transmission Service Urgent" this XC90 has 105,000 miles but had one transmission replaced already at 30,000 under warranty. Took the car to the dealer this morning, I have not heard the damage yet, but my service rep was not surprised at all, I am sure they have seen many. Was about to trade in this car on a new V8 XC90 with 6 speed transmission, but after reading so many complaints about the T6, I don't care how much better the V8 is, if this is Volvo's meaning of customer service I am done after 30 years of owning at least one Volvo in the family.

Glad to have ran across this site... thanks to everyone for your post. Here's my story.
'04 XC90 with transmission problems at 53K, dealership said it's slipping in 3rd gear and needed to be replaced at a cost of $4200. They eventually said they'll pay the labor if I pay for the transmission and get the 60K service with them. I'm going to bring in a copy of these posting and see what's their reaction. More to follow.

We have a 2004 XC90 T6 with 74,000 miles. We were just informed the transmission needs to be replaced after the urgent warning light came on. The Service Manager at the dealership claims this is "rare." We bought it new and all of the maintenance has been done at the dealership every 7,500 miles just as recommended. We are also on our third set of brakes and tires. We were also quoted $5000 for the new transmission. Getting real tired of this "great" car. We would participate in a class action if one is brought about. We are in Baton Rouge, LA. We are going in tomorrow morning with a copy of this blog for some "leverage." We will report back if it was any help.
