I also own a Toyota Caldina 4s engine. It was also characterised with hard starting when it is cold, but when I changed the water temperature sensor, I no longer experiencing the problem.

You need to change the cylinder head gasket.

If your engine is 5k, don't use a 4k cylinder head gasket. I experienced that trouble when I used a 4k cylinder gasket for my 5k engine.
