I had the same on a 2003 Polo 6 v 3 cylinder, quite common apparently, the chain tensioner is made of monkey metal, so the chain jumps a few teeth, still drives OK, but eventually burns out the exhaust valves, hence the uneven tickover. Just cost me £480 trade price, new modified chain, 3 valves, and I'm a mechanic, thought it was a coil going AWOL, bought the Polo cheap with the misfire, will think twice next time..
The same is happening to my car, but what was the exact problem with your car? You mention you took it to a garage and now it's fine, so what was causing it??
