My car is the same with the engine light. Turns out the ECU needs replacing.

Same thing is happening to my 2001 City Astra right now. I've just been told I have to have the CPU replaced $1500 - not happy Jan!!!

Same problem with my 2000 model. It was the alternator which charges the battery.
