Under the car on the passenger side is the fuel filter. On front of the filter assembly is a rubber button, which when pressed will pump fuel through the engine and back to the fuel tank. It is quite hard to press, but you will hear fuel and air returning to the tank after a few presses. The engine still may not start for several start cycles of 20 seconds or more. I removed the rubber hose from the fuel return u-bend at the back passenger side of the engine, and fitted a small plastic hose into a container to be able to see when the fuel was clear of air. This enabled a quicker start after a complete rebuild of the engine.

The fuel system needs to be bled, which happens when you run out of fuel in a diesel. You will probably need to get a mechanic or roadside assist to do it. This is why you never want to run a diesel to empty.
