Well, we did it, 300,000 miles, and still it burns no oil and runs like a top, September 18th, 2015, and would buy another in a heartbeat. According to Kelley Blue Book, it is worth 1,500 dollars.
I have no doubt that this was one of the finest autos and engines that Chevrolet ever built (and I have been driving Chevy's since 1961 (1949 fastback with starter button on the dash was my first, followed by my two toned Chevy "Star fire Six").
If you can find one with less than 150,000 miles on it, BUY IT, it still has 150,000 left.
Only problems were oil pan gasket, and front wheel bearings. Otherwise no problems!
Still wish I would have kept my 1958 two door Chevy Impala Super Sport... paid $800.00 for it in the early sixties when I was in high school, and gave it to my "little brother" just before I went into the service in 1968... now it is worth $80,000. 11 MPG, and a rocket!!

My wife finally retired, and the 2004 Chevy now has 310,000 miles on it and it still purrs... and no oil burning, just changed the coolant, and the mechanic wanted to know if I would like to set up the next appointment for the 450,000 mile check up :+)}}} I told him I would think about it... and now three mechanics at the local Chevy dealership have expressed an interest in purchasing my little auto!
We will be looking at another Malibu sometime this year, and keep this one as a back up. All the best.
If you can find a 2004 that is well maintained, it will last you at least 300,000 miles...

After the installation of the new seal, mechanics recommended 5-30, had the oil changed two thousand miles ago, and so far with 297,000 miles on her, she burns no oil. The gasket seems to have done the job.
Had two mechanics offer to buy my auto, if I was interested in selling, maybe next year, or at 400,000 miles, we will see...
I love my car! tTen stars and counting :+)}}}
