It's possible. These cars have a super lazy rear end ratio (think it's 2:28:1) and a carb that's jetted very lean + an ECM that further leans out the mixture at constant operating speeds.
I've only owned mine for a few months and haven't yet taken a long trip, but it doesn't burn much gas at all. Fortunate enough to find a Gran Fury with only 10k miles in mint condition. I love it.

It's true! All the way back to NC, I kept stopping every 100 miles, not believing it. Had an 86 D150 new, was getting 16 MPG highway. Now back in mountains getting 21 MPG. Kids say I drive like old lady right now. 4 barrel setup and cam sitting on the shelf waiting for lean burn to go!
