Original poster here: So I have done a couple of long trips with the Escape since purchasing it. Both were around 5 hours. The first trip I felt the need to stop for fuel as it was running below a quarter tank just before getting to the destination (maybe 30 miles out). I then decided to throw a K&N filter in as I have used them on every turbocharged engine I have owned over the years. I immediately noticed a significant power increase, but more importantly I made the same 5 hour trip to the same destination and had over a quarter of a tank of gas left when I got there. Around town doesn't seem a lot different for mileage, but the highway mileage went up a decent amount. I'm now just about at 23K miles and I also switched over to Mobil 1 oil and filter. My other vehicle has been running great on that oil and still runs strong at over 130K miles. Nothing else noteworthy has happened since my original post. It continues to be the most comfortable vehicle and I really enjoy driving it.

You are absolutely right on the mileage comments. I didn't expect it to be great with the 2.0 as I mostly do around town short trips, so I didn't go into it with any false preconceptions it was going to come even close to the Elantra. The funny thing with the Elantra was it was underrated by the EPA. I actually averaged 30 around town and it was rated at 28 highway. I was getting around 36 on the highway with that car.
