If you make 50% more in California compared to doing the same job somewhere else, which is not uncommon, that argument doesn’t really make sense.

It's currently up to the equivalent of US$8.51/gal here in New Zealand, up from US$7.55/gal just 3 weeks ago. That's for 98 RON unleaded premium. Still very cheap in America.
