Excellent replies so far guys, very informative, thank you! Yes I see now how and why people view certain cars a certain way. I grew up in the 80's also. Cars like the 65 Mustang and 69 Charger were pretty famous here in the UK, mostly due to famous movies and TV shows. I had a relative from the USA who always told me since the late 70's cars there had went downhill. In my older and wiser years I read a lot about it, but just wanted to know from real experience if it was true.
Of course, it would be insanely expensive (especially right now with current fuel costs!) to buy and drive a gas guzzler V8 muscle car from 60's or whatever here in the UK right now. I'm thinking a Camaro or Mustang from the more modern era circa 2006 onwards would be a more practical choice for a fun car for weekend / summer use only. If not those cars or something similar, my dream of driving an American iconic car will just have to wait.

"whatever crap Chrysler had" ?
You mean, the Simca, Sunbeam, (Mitsubishi) Colt, and (Hillman) Cricket?
Yeah, they were crap. And none were built in the US.

The Vega & Pinto were not FWD cars.
