I am owner of 2000 Jeep GCLtd and have experienced same tail/brakelight problems.
The problem with the taillights was that they would go off when my headlamps were on and the brakes depressed. It started with my left one. I tried replacing bulbs and still had the problem.
I found this forum and used an idea to fix the problem at no cost to me. And it took me five minutes. Check out the post from January 1st, 2005. I followed the steps and it works!
I've replied to it in case you don't want to hunt for it.
