1991 Ford Fiesta XR2i 2.8 petrol
Summary:
Very sporty, quite fun, a bit of rust, but who cares!
Faults:
Replaced muffler/back box.
Replaced rear shock and mount (broke right through from underneath)
Replaced rear wheel bearing.
Front sway bar bent, probably from a crash before I owned it.
Rust a major problem, eventually forced me to sell it.
General Comments:
I was the 11th owner of the 'Silver Bullet' and definitely not the first to rag it around the country lanes! The performance from the engine was really good, enough that I explored the option of putting the 1.8 Zetec EFI engine in another Fiesta, but this proved impractical.
My car was lowered by a previous owner and fitted with low-profile 15-inch tyres, which made for great handling, but high tyre costs as the front arms were still stock, making the inside of the tyres wear out very quickly.
While seemingly small inside it could hold quite a lot of equipment or gear, the hard plastic backing on the fold-down rear seats helped getting things in and out. The only problems came when I put a speaker box and a box of 'car things' in the boot, then it became a chore to try to fit anything in the back.
This was cheap thrills and a great drive for just about any journey. Able to keep up with just about anything in the fast lane, yet good enough torque in 2nd to putter around town.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Classic? 63hp and 73lb-Ft of torque in the 1991 Fiesta. Hardly a “hot” hatch in my opinion.

The review is for the newer model year 1991 UK based XR2i version of the Fiesta, which in this updated car has 102bhp, not bad in a car that only weighs about 900kg. Good enough for 0-60 in 9 seconds and tops out at about 120mph, similar performance to the Golf GTI, Astra GTE and many similar other hot hatches of the time.
Also they normally had 1.6 engines, the review says 2.8, which is either a typo or a heck of an engine swap in this car!

Did you read which engine it had?

No one in the right mind would compare this Fiesta to an M5, obviously it would be beaten.
It's just a luke warm hatch that should be compared to other sporty hatchbacks.
XR2i do have quite a following and a touch of nostalgia for many here in the UK.

Ford did build a 2.8 V6. Being a 60 degree block it could probably be shoehorned under the hood of this car.

Classic hot hatch, friend had one of these back in the mid 1990's, fun cars.
