If you have a paid off house, why not splurge on the best possible vehicle for off-roading (a Jeep)? Why do the repair costs matter either if you have no debt? They’ve gotten reliable in recent decades. Other manufacturers like Ford also stepped up big in the past 15 years or so. US manufacturers realized their quality control was lacking compared to the competition and stepped it up. Remembering that Jeeps in the 80’s weren’t the most reliable is not relevant to the 2021 versions or any recent years.

You are right about Jeep’s used to be a utility vehicle; these days they are for running to the shops. If you want a proper 4x4, buy a Toyota.

I guess nobody has taken the time to read the author's recent comment replies, as they are not in the market for a 4x4 vehicle and that they rented a Jeep a while ago and despised it.

Wrong. Research Mustangs 2005 & after compared to the ones in the early 2000’s and before. Let me know what you find out.
17th Mar 2021, 18:55
Yes rented a Jeep from the 80’s and said it had a rough ride. Not comparable to a 2020 or 2021 Jeep.

Why is there any discussion other than Chevrolet Volt? No Toyota or other brands. Don’t care about what you drive otherwise on vacations.

Jeep is the off-road king. Even when one is in distress and needs a tow, sometimes it's another Jeep that comes to the rescue.

Research the Ecoboost engines used in the newer F 150 and let me know what you find out.

Very true actually. Someone above provided a YouTube video showing exactly that. Thought they were proving something by showing a Jeep being towed. Joke was on them. Another Jeep was the one doing the towing!
18th Mar 2021, 21:57
No, they didn't. Go back and read "7th Jan 2021, 18:58". They rented a Rubicon, not a Jeep from the 80's. Probably rented the 2020 or 2021 model year seeing how major rental companies rent all brand new.
19th Mar 2021, 17:28
No, I think they were proving that a Jeep can be towed. Even though a prior comment to that video made it out that a Jeep being towed was virtually an impossible situation, no matter what vehicle would be of assistance.

Bought an Escape with Ecoboost new in 2013. Still have it. Have not had a single problem with it. Guess I should trust what some stranger on the Internet says about Ecoboost compared to my actual experience. Coworker has a 2018 F-150 which he bought new and loves the truck. Odd, almost seems like problems are exaggerated on the Internet. Even people here discussing bad Jeep reliability in 2021 don’t mesh with reality. Opinions are 20-30 years outdated.

The guy goes off and says buying new cars would not pay his house off. No kids. I don’t know how I did it, plus educating a family, helping them buy cars, weddings and helping them towards homes. If I only had to pay for myself, no kids, it would be a cakewalk in the park. And I drove nice cars. Family is far better than cars, but they are great to drive. Life is good.

Yeah well, what will fix the Jeep when it breaks down and falls apart because it's an utter piece of garbage built by Chrysler/Fiat?
19th Mar 2021, 22:46
"Thought they were proving something"??
Actually I did prove something, linking a video after you or whoever stated "A Jeep wouldn't need to be towed at all".
Again that's too bad if you don't care for the video. And so what if it's another Jeep doing the tow. Only because his Jeep buddy was there to help. What if it was an actual flatbed or tow truck doing the job, how would you nit pick the video then?
20th Mar 2021, 16:56
Find a vehicle which can traverse that terrain and not be towed, then maybe you proved something. Otherwise, who cares? Would be like evaluating who makes the best ice cream after it has to sit 10 minutes under a heat lamp. The deck is stacked against you, and nobody can succeed. Does not prove someone’s ice cream is bad if not one person can make it without melting.
20th Mar 2021, 16:58
Show me a flatbed going through the terrain the Jeep got “stuck” in, then come talk to me.

Guys enjoy what you like. This guy is fixated on not spending anything in our price range. New or Used. Including other than Jeep’s. And you have nothing to prove. If there are some repairs, so what. If he ever buys a 40-55k vehicle and then takes it apart to load and upgrade from new parts as built, to even better parts, I will be the first to apologize. I’ve added at least 15k on mine. Personality like and my preference. No qualms spending the money whatsoever. Everything else paid for. Guys will spend to have great trucks, Jeep’s, cars, boats, jet skis etc. to go faster and as accessories. This will never change. Pinching pennies is not quality of life if you can splurge and have it.

Mostly the V6 Ecoboost are the ones with problems, and wasn't used in your Escape.
If you don't agree, simply google Ecoboost issues. There are quite a few sites (from real people and not CarSurvey strangers), forums, Consumer Reports and videos ranging from timing chain failure, carbon build up, not to mention class action law suites and recalls. Of course this will not happen to every last owner, but IMO these V6 engines used in the current F-150 are not the greatest. Best 6 cylinder used was the 4.9 straight 6 years back, not exactly a gas sipper like the Ecoboost, but indestructible.
Just so you know I'm not bashing Ford in any way. They have their good and they have their bad. We had a 2008 Escape in our family, a very good crossover. Also 2 of my very best personal cars were built on the Panther chassis and one is still going strong today.

Pinching pennies is why someone buys a 30 year old Jeep, says it has a rough ride, and doesn’t splurge on a new one. You get what you pay for. Buying new cars is fine actually as long as you hold onto it for at least 5 years. That’s my rule of thumb. The only people who lose tons of money on at purchases are the ones who dump them after a year or two each time. Or anyone who leases, which is a glorified car rental which works out to financing at over 14% interest during the lease term on average.

I seriously don't get the guy who keeps poking fun of me for not spending money the way he/she feels it should be spent. Spending money isn't everyone's idea of fun. OTOH I just paid off my house. 20 years early. Had I "had fun" spending it on cars then that would not have happened. As a result, we will probably be having a whole lot of fun earlier than most because we will be able to retire before we're too old to enjoy it.
And as far as Jeep reliability? They are, as we speak, roughly 3/4 of the way down the list in terms of that. They have not ever been that reliable, and Chrysler as a whole has been hugging the bottom for years with the likes of Land Rover and Jaguar.
