1996 Ford Probe SE 2.0L 16v DOHC I4 from North America

Summary:

A cheap semi sports car that handles like a dream, but could use some more ponies under the hood

Faults:

Tune up at 60,000. Engine Started Skipping.

Fuel Pump at 60,000.

Mass airflow sensor at 70,000.

Power window switch Broke at 75,000

Radiator started leaking at 80,000.

General Comments:

The car will handle like a German sports car. The engine is dull and could use some more pones under the hood. Seats are well bolsterd and keep you in place for high performance driving, but lack lumbar support for long trips and are rather hard. Back seat is for small children only and is a pain to access. I like the cars design and interior it gives it a sports car feel with the black on tan interior.

I have a 1996 Probe Se. 160,000 miles. 4 cylinder. When I have it in neutral it wants to die. I have changed the spark plugs and put a new fuel filter on it, but it still wants to die. What can I do?

Simply you need to change the gasket, then it will be good.

Apart from the fact that you are replying to a comment that was posted seven years ago, a typical car engine has at least a dozen or more gaskets, so saying "simply change the gasket" is of little to no help!

1996 Ford Probe SE 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Great fun to drive

Faults:

3 censors at 70,000

Transmission at 99,000.

General Comments:

Great handling, and a lot of fun to drive. My only complaint is there are constant little repairs to do, but nothing major except the transmission. I love this car.

1996 Ford Probe GT 2.5 from North America

Summary:

An excellent option to all the imports

Faults:

Oil was accumulating in the spark plug wells, and the valve cover gaskets had to be replaced at 70,000 miles.

The C.V. boot ripped, and the axles had to be replaced at 80,000 miles. The new axles came with a lifetime warranty.

The hatch struts need to be replaced, but I am too lazy to buy new ones. A 2x2 strip of wood does wonders.

General Comments:

Overall, I love the car! In stock form the car is wonderful, but after a few mods it is absolutely amazing!

Make sure you keep the oil changed regularly and this car will last a long time.

1996 Ford Probe GT 24v from North America

Faults:

My transmition went out 4 times, but because I bought it from a great place they fixed it until it was right for free.

I went through some water and destroyed my entire motor.

General Comments:

I love my car to death, but remember don't go through any high water!!!

1996 Ford Probe GT 2.5L from North America

Summary:

I love my Probe

Faults:

No real faults, but the factory tires were horrible in the snow, should be sued for these tires, you stop, the car doesn't.

General Comments:

The car needs really good tires, four good wide rain dry weather ones for summer, and thin snow tires for winter or else you're asking for an accident. Only car to scare me in winter driving and I've hade a Mazda RX7 and a Camaro. This is the worst just because you can't stop or get going with the wide tires.

1996 Ford Probe LX 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A true sports car with an exotic flair!

Faults:

The hatch hydraulics were replaced once after I took it on a ski trip in California during Winter. After the trip, the hatch would not stay open. Other than that... nothing ever went wrong with the car.

General Comments:

I opted for the economy of a 4-cyl. Performed like a 6-cyl. car would.

The design was clean and crisp. Larger than most sports car of similar design and excellent handling and stability (I have heard that the GT model is superb!).

Fuel efficiency is great... would go from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back on one tank of gas... with the A/C on!

Ergonomics and space for driver and passenger are great. Forget about the back seats... the car should have been a two-seater. The seat was molded to fit me perfectly and long trips were never ever a bother for me.

Even in the hills of California, I found myself doing little downshifting to climb many steep streets... the engine was quite powerful and fast. Extremely quiet when idling. Sometimes I could not tell if the engine was on or not.

A great sports car, though a bit more expensive than others, when nicely equipped.

Oh yeah... wish it had cup holders and stuff... very little in the way of storage inside, despite its large size.
