1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 3.0L naturally aspirated from North America

Summary:

Good car, I have faith in it

Faults:

I bought it with a couple of busted piston rings, knowing I'd have to rebuild the engine. Had the engine rebuilt. But one of the hydraulic lifters seems to be making a ticking annoying sound. Hence the reason I chose the straight face. That's pretty much my main concern. Either it's clogged or it's not seating the right way. I will add a lifter cleaner, then go ahead and drain the oil and see if that goes away. If not, I am taking it back to my mechanic to address the issue.

Interior headliner lights don't work.

I have a brake light that I might have to replace both sockets.

It has like an old metal scent to the interior.

The body has zero rust.

I do need to replace the lower control arm bushings, so I can get a good alignment.

General Comments:

Overall it runs fine. Just wish I had more money to restore it.

1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 3.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

Great car up until now - hope we can save it

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 160,000 miles.

Seat belt latches had to be replaced.

General Comments:

Great family car! Bought it new in '91 - our first SUV. It's been 4-wheeling in the mountains above Boise, ID.

It was the first car my first son ever rode in as a baby, and now it's his car. I had the engine rebuilt and fresh paint put on it for his 16th birthday 2 years ago. However, now, 2 years later it's having some problems. It has no power from a stopped position - seems like it just can't get any rpm's... in fact the rpm's go so low the engine nearly dies, but doesn't. I have it in a shop, but they can't figure it out. Not a plug, not wires, replaced all those plus cap and rotor. Replaced throttle positioning sensor and coil. Still does the same thing. Could it be the injector?? Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks!

Check the catalytic converter; it might be plugged.

1991 Mitsubishi Montero 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

Excellent on/off road vehicle

Faults:

I've taken very good care of my Montero. Bought it new. Always used full synthetic oil.

At 268,000 miles I am now experiencing low idle and low oil pressure. I think I need a new oil pump, but not sure if I should bother on a motor that has this many miles on it. I've driven it hard, but have taken good care of it. Little things are going out, electric window, door handles, that kind of stuff.

What is the best advice to keep this car on the road, or is it a cash for clunkers now? Can I replace the oil pump without having to overhaul the entire motor? Are new motors available?

It's not a Cash for Clunkers. That deals over. I'd fix it. You've got a real gem.

1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 3.0L 12-valve from Philippines

Summary:

Very reliable!

Faults:

The engine misfired & needed to change the OE spark plug cables to Magnecor brand. The ISC Stepper Motor had to be changed to regulate Idle Speed. Yearly check the ECU (computer box) for any faults or trouble codes.

General Comments:

This old school SUV is built like a rock. Just service it regularly with a good parts (OE or a good brand after-market parts), it will always run & get you there with no problem.

1991 Mitsubishi Montero LS 3.0 gas from Philippines

Summary:

I think it is reliable car

Faults:

After under wash with pressurize water, check engine red light did not disappear.

Is this a big problem or just a minor problem?

I suspect electrical wirings are wet does having " check engine" warning light appearing on the panel board because of recent under washing activities.

General Comments:

I only have this car last November, but I think this car is reliable.

Is anybody who owns '91 LS Montero can give copy of parts manual?

These vehicles were programmed to the have the Check Engine light come on at certain intervals - It may just need to be reset. To reset, there is a switch behind the odometer - you need to take the instrument cluster cover off to do this. It's really a simple thing to do.

You are confusing the check engine light with the maintenance reminder light. The check engine light indicates a problem and is NOT programmed to "come on at certain intervals".

It's not the check engine light that comes on at certain intervals. It's another light that says maintenance required.

Depends on what kind of maintenance needs to be done.
