Yet if they charged full rent they could pay down a mortgage quicker. Or invest the added rent into another property. Probably a wash with the figures.

Odds are the dealer would come pick up one while you drove others. And likely have far more tools and higher end diagnostic equipment there. I have owned 3 single family rentals at one time. I learned it's best to not rent exactly where you live. Especially on the same street. It's a lot more peaceful. Any issue, you see them each and every morning.

My garage has a pool table over it with floor to ceiling memorabilia. To me it is the ultimate sacred guy cave with my cars. I enjoy spending more time in there than in my home. It also has kept my sanity at times being married. Nice having a place totally your own as a retreat. I collect sports cars, not a Rolls. But they are pretty complex as well. I don't fret over maintenance costs, as if that were an issue I should not have bought them. Neat story though.

I wonder if the owner of a 1984 Rolls Royce frets more over maintenance costs vs a 2016 owner? My only issue is time wasted driving to drop off/pick up cars vs whatever it actually costs to fix. That's easily remedied. I have it dropped off at work or home. Have someone else drive it through inspection. And that's only once every 2 years. Have a service take care of the lawn and cleaning. And having the place only to ourselves evenings and weekends. Who needs a round the clock mechanic living with you?

That was a great reply. I bought my 1982 Rolls Royce Silver Spur as a reward for surviving one of the most tumultuous times in my life . But also it was a promise that I made to myself as a young man. I am not a super high income earner and I am not a person that moves in any particular circle. I am just a man that always wanted to have a few luxury items to make life more interesting. I would say because it's not a daily driver I never worry about the little issues. Overall reliability has been pretty good. It's only failed to proceed twice in 6 years. Pretty good for a car that's 38 years old!

We only live once, at least in our present lifeforms. So if we want a Rolls, an Aston, etc. for however long our ownership... we likely owe it to ourselves to 'just do it'!

Something about having a really nice car. I found myself even performing better at work. Quality of life vs. driving just a toaster.

I don't think this is a universally applied sentiment. I make what is probably in the upper 5% in terms of income level. Yet I drive the 26 year old Toyota truck I bought back when I was in high school. It's a stripper with a bench seat, crank windows, a 5 speed and not much else. And that's what I like. In a era where the average car comes with a huge array of gadgets it's refreshing to drive something that seems so utilitarian and honest. 26 years later and it still puts a smile on my face.

Exactly. Quality of life improves with no car payment and not having $40k in credit card debt, too!

2nd Dec 2021, 21:35

Who says you necessarily have a $40K credit card debt just because you decided to buy a used Rolls? People decide what brings quality to their life. If a bench seat on an old Toyota pickup is your thing, great. But if what you want is the craftsmanship that comes with a Rolls - regardless of age - and you can afford to buy it and keep it (if you use it as a daily driver then you'll need to be a person of means to maintain it commensurate to mileage travelled, but as a Sunday car, may be totally feasible) which increases the quality of your life, what's wrong with that? A Casio will tell the same time as a Rolex, but if you are one who appreciates the latter's mechanical movement and how the entire watch was designed and put together including detailing of the crown, and you need not buy it new, go for it!

Maybe you need a raise. You assume we have car loans. Everything is dollars and cents. I borrowed money in my 30s to buy 3 rental properties. Spent money to make money. Am sure you do not need a reminder where that headed. Yes that was debt. Today it’s no debt positive rentals and cars paid off each time feeling no pain. There’s a lot of smart people on here. Looking up, not settling for just anything on 4 wheels.

The personality type fits. People overspending their means and concerned about appearance and image. People who actually have the money for a Rolls don’t buy used.

Lessons on life comments strike again!

3rd Dec 2021, 20:40

Good for you. I've never had debt because I simply buy what I want to buy including the house we bought for cash. Because we save and work hard. To each their own.

3rd Dec 2021, 20:48

It’s a smart assumption to assume most cars aren’t bought. I suggest you check the statistics. 70-80% or even more of a lot of luxury car brands are leased, not bought. Just one example. The average car loan is over $40k now. The vast majority of people do not seem to make wise financial decisions when acquiring transportation.

22:47 What do you possibly get being on a Rolls Royce review? New or used. To come on here saying you're high income and upper 5%? Who is going to sell theirs to buy an old mini truck? Is there something you need to prove to yourself? People buy something that's been a dream, for enjoyment. Do not buy one. Someone retired is supposed to just sit around being the king in the counting house. And do nothing with their money. It's not anything you can enjoy in any cemetery. Spend a little vs a miserly existence have a lot of fun. Life is good!

4th Dec 2021, 20:48

You know more than I do then. Have not taken any car loan out since the 90s. Write a check.

4th Dec 2021, 21:05

So how is it overspending if you're buying used? Besides that, have you seen what the new Rolls cars look like? And of course the new Rolls Royces are BMWs, the real Rolls Royce craftsmen are now at Bentley, if you really wanted to buy new. Personality types indeed: the type who finds it fitting to buy a Rolls only if it is new because it fits the profile, and the type who likes the Rolls for what it IS and enjoys it, and buys what he can afford.

They seem to hover and pounce every so often. Totally miss the point of why the review was made. But that's the Internet for you. I dare they walk up to a man in a Rolls and speak their mind. They wouldn't. Being online allows people to do things they would not dare to do otherwise in real life.
