If you use the tilt wheel a lot, you may want to look behind the steering wheel, at the harness, for your possible short.

Shortly after my last post, I paid an alarm tech to "make my tail light group work". He installed a relay that triggered the system through the ignition accessory position. That worked until I finally ripped out the Ungo alarm myself. I'm now attempting to trace wiring through the tail light fuse, the tail light relay, and the integration relay.
Otherwise, the truck is still competent to drive anywhere. I'm riding on my original spare tire now (Dunlop) which has no visible cracks. My oil of choice now is Shell Rotella T4 15W40 for summer, and any competent 10W30 oil in winter. My tail pipes still pass the white tissue test, but I'm losing oil through valve cover gaskets and other head related gaskets. Heads and compression are both fine.
353,000 trying miles and I still love it.

354,000+ miles. After ripping the Ungo alarm out, I became obsessed (necessarily) because only the headlights worked on the truck. After three days of studying the factory manual, tracing wires, and testing connections from beneath the steering wheel, I found the short and now I have ALL LIGHTS WORKING AGAIN. Anyone wondering should start with the two white wires leading from the light/turn signal stalk on the left side of the steering wheel. I believe either the no. 10 or 11 position in the harness. Check for "no signal" at the no. one tab on the taillight control relay. I simply ran a small wire from the 10/11 connector beneath the steering wheel to the one connector on the taillight control relay. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks, and you were correct. Even though I hadn't been a frequent user of my tilt wheel, that was the answer to the problem. See my last comment.

After paying for premium gas for 250K miles due to rattling under stress on hills at high speeds, I tried a tank of regular. The truck has run perfectly and I can't tell a difference in mileage or power between regular and premium gas.
The tail and marker light problems are presumed to be associated with my 22 year-old Ungo alarm system.
337,000+ miles, and I'm loving it.
