Apparently your dad doesn't know how to read an odometer?

Tesla claims that the Model S has a range of 336 miles, but realistically it will only do half of that.

23rd Mar 2019, 18:06

Not sold on the idea. Fiskar was another one with fire concerns. Buying and then living with vehicles are two different stories. I take trips. It’s a great feeling having a sports car which can be serviced most anywhere, parts are relatively quick and easy to access. And back on the road. It’s bad enough with many fuel models with this issue. Maybe in 20 years.

The advertised range for the Tesla Model S Long Distance version is 336 miles, but real life tests have shown that it will do 204 miles, and it will only go 204 miles if you stay at 56 mph and don't use the air-conditioning. Increase the speed to 70 mph and turn on the A/C and the range drops to 112 miles. Now granted that an electric car will be cheaper to recharge than filling up the fuel tank of a car, but it's worth paying more to resume your journey more quickly and not suffer from range anxiety.

Depends how you use a car though. If I lived in a busy city and did not travel much, I'd get a Tesla. If I drove hundreds of miles per week, I'd get an economical diesel car.

People are not buying a 250k sports car unless it’s blistering fast. Saving pennies on electric or fuel isn’t even a remote factor. It better be very special as there are amazing alternatives in that price category.

The electric car is just like socialism. It's a wrong idea that failed before and will continue to fail forever.

21st May 2020, 15:16

I don't like socialism either, but we're talking about cars here :)

Anyways, I think the electric car will be a success, but petrol and diesel will still be around for a long time to come - probably hybrids with an electric option of some sort. Would like to see more electric car reviews on here, especially Tesla's.

Tesla is involved in much more than cars throughout the world.

An article about common 12v battery failure (which will make the car dead and stranded)

Absolutely right.

Unfortunately, not all electric cars will be as good as a Tesla Model S. Think of a Nissan Leaf and that is what most will be like, even in ten years time. Not exciting at all. Wonderful for the environment (in regards to emissions only, never forget how much energy is needed to be used to make these things) but boring for any car enthusiast.

I can understand electric car use in the cities, but out on the open road, you will never beat a proper petrol or diesel car with plenty of power and a manual transmission, they offer a driving experience and make a sound like nothing else ever will.

I’d possible consider a Taycan.

13th Feb 2022, 16:31

Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S and a few select others will be the only electric cars worth considering for the car enthusiast if all else goes electric. But the average person probably still won't be able to afford those cars, even in a few years time.

15th Feb 2022, 03:54

$185k and up. A lot of hard work to save up for. But you can’t spend it in a graveyard.

15th Feb 2022, 15:15

Good point, but I think hybrids will be the future. Petrol/electric. The idea of full electric or self driving cars becoming common place is a pipe dream, at least not for another 10 years anyway.

21st Jul 2022, 16:48

Well, here we are, five years later. Do we have electric cars with 500 mile range? Nope. Do we have "electric service stations" in our neighborhood? No, don't have those either.

We do have $4+/gallon gas prices though, guess we should be happy for that... :(

22nd Jul 2022, 11:59

We won't have it in 2030 either, but will probably still have high gas prices.

26th Aug 2023, 17:52

Actually I have two electrical "Service Stations" in my neighborhood (Tesla Superchargers) and around here (the Bay Area) they are quite common. Second there are several EVs that now have 500+ "rated" mile range; the LUCID Air is one example. Most ICE vehicles don't have 500+ mile range either. Also charging cycle times are reducing from what use to be ~40-45 minutes to 20-25 minutes for the same states of charge.
